The Lions sent David Montgomery to the Texans in exchange for a draft pick on March 2. Montgomery, who turns 29 and was slated to earn $6 million in his first year of a two‑year extension, had a reduced role last season behind Jahmyr Gibbs.
General manager Brad Holmes said the move was a way to move forward, and the trade frees roughly $3.5 million in cap room, though the Lions will need to find a replacement. Potential free‑agent options include Brian Robinson, Najee Harris and Cardinals backs Michael Carter and Emari Demercado.
