The AIA imposed the penalty after video footage showed Coolidge players allegedly taunting opponents during their 64-53 quarterfinal victory over Chinle. The sanctions include a playoff ban for all school teams, which Coolidge is currently appealing. If upheld, the Bears would be disqualified from postseason play in all sports for one year, including forfeiting their scheduled 3A state semifinal against Snowflake. Arizona state legislator Myron Tsosie commented on the incident, stating he had seen numerous messages from Chinle families regarding the 'unfortunate events.' Coolidge, currently 23-7 and ranked No. 62, would have to forfeit their semifinal matchup if the sanctions stand, automatically advancing Snowflake to the state championship game.
