Peter Schmeichel has shared his initial thoughts on Senne Lammens following the goalkeeper’s arrival at Manchester United, according to Premier League presenter Steve Bower.
Senne Lammens was the last addition to Manchester United’s squad during the 2025 summer transfer window, joining under Ineos ownership.
Signed for an initial fee of £18.1m from Royal Antwerp, the 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper arrived at Old Trafford while Ruben Amorim was in charge.
The Belgium international made the switch to England on deadline day last September and has already started making a positive impression at his new club.
Steve Bower shares Peter Schmeichel’s view of Senne Lammens signing with Michael Owen
Senne Lammens has stepped into the role of Manchester United’s No 1 for the 2025-26 season, taking over from Andre Onana, who joined Turkish side Trabzonspor in 2025.
The former Royal Antwerp keeper has registered five clean sheets in his first 22 appearances for United across all competitions.
During Premier League Productions’ coverage of Man Utd’s narrow win over Everton on Monday, Michael Owen noted how impressed he was with Lammens’ performances so far.
“Yeah, really impressive,” he said. “I mean, because you say it’s been a problem position. It has been. And I think they’ve almost stumbled on Lammens in many ways.”
Bower picked up on Owen’s use of “stumbled” and pointed out that even club legend Peter Schmeichel hadn’t heard of Lammens before his arrival at Old Trafford.
“Well, you say stumbled,” Bower replied. “Let’s give some credit to the recruitment team because he went under the radar. I mean, the day he signed, I texted Peter Schmeichel.”
“You know what Peter Schmeichel said? And he watches goalkeepers everywhere. He said: ‘I’ve never heard of him Steve.’”
Senne Lammens making a quiet impact at Manchester United
Schmeichel’s been a fan since Lammens made the switch to Old Trafford, and the Belgium international hasn’t taken long to settle in. It’s still early days, but he already looks comfortable in his new surroundings.
One thing that’s stood out is how reliable he’s been. Unlike Andre Onana or Altay Bayindir, Lammens hasn’t had many high-profile mistakes. He plays with confidence and authority.
Lammens was given the starting spot under Amorim, and he’s kept it going since Michael Carrick took over as caretaker manager.
And three of his five league clean sheets this season have come under Carrick since Amorim left last month.
