New Rule Forces Minute Pause for Injured Footballers

Football authorities will implement a new rule requiring players receiving on-field treatment to wait one full minute on the sidelines before returning to matches, effective immediately after approval this weekend.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) is set to approve the new regulation during its annual general assembly this Saturday. Currently, there are no specific rules in football's rulebook about how long a player who has received treatment must remain off the field, allowing leagues to set their own guidelines. The Premier League has operated with a 30-second rule since the 2023/24 season.

The measure aims to combat time-wasting tactics where players feign injuries to disrupt opponents' momentum. Football authorities have long sought a standardized approach to address this issue, which has become increasingly prevalent in modern matches.
