McIlroy Survives Tough Conditions to Lead Genesis

Rory McIlroy shot a 5-under 66 in challenging conditions at the Genesis Invitational, sharing the lead after posting a strong first-round score despite rain and wind.

Rory McIlroy navigated difficult conditions at Riviera Country Club to post a 5-under 66 in the opening round of the Genesis Invitational. The Northern Irishman handled both rain and 20+ mph wind gusts with ease, birdying twice in his first three holes before a three-hour delay, and then birdying his first hole after the break.

McIlroy nearly went bogey-free before slipping at the 16th, but he responded with a birdie on the 17th to get back into a share of the lead. Aaron Rai eventually passed him with a late birdie before play was suspended due to darkness. McIlroy noted his improved mindset for challenging conditions, saying 'I wouldn't say I enjoy them, but I can certainly handle them better.'
