Hugo Ekitike Shines in Liverpool 5-2 Win Over West Ham United
Liverpool’s 5-2 victory over West Ham United felt significant for many reasons. It tightened the gap to the top four, moving Arne Slot’s side within three points of both Aston Villa and Manchester United, who occupy fourth and third respectively. Yet beyond the mathematics of the Premier League table, the afternoon belonged to Hugo Ekitike.
Speaking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, David Lynch did not hold back in his assessment of the French forward’s display. “He was brilliant. He has taken on the responsibility of being Liverpool’s most important attacker this season.”
That is a weighty statement, particularly at a club where expectations are relentless and scrutiny is constant. Under Arne Slot, who delivered a Premier League title in his debut season, the title defence has faltered. Sitting fifth is not where Liverpool expected to be. In that context, Ekitike’s influence carries even greater significance.
Consistency Driving Liverpool’s Top Four Push
Lynch continued: “Ekitike has consistently stayed fit and started the season really well. We’ve seen very few dips from him and he could easily have more goals.”
Availability remains an underrated currency in modern football. Liverpool have navigated injuries in key areas, yet Ekitike has stood firm. At 23, in his first Premier League campaign, he has embraced the physicality and tempo of English football with a maturity that belies his age.
His goal and two assists against West Ham were not simply numbers on a stat sheet. They reflected timing of movement, awareness of space and a willingness to shoulder responsibility. In a side that has occasionally lacked fluency this season, he has provided direction.
Liverpool’s attacking patterns under Slot are built on rotation and fluidity. Ekitike’s intelligence allows others to thrive. He drifts, he stretches defences, and he finishes with conviction. It is easy to forget this is his first year in the division.
Managing Workload in Crucial Months Ahead
There is, however, a note of caution. Lynch added: “He’s still only 23 and it’s his first season in the Premier League, so imagine how good he is going to be in a few years because he is already absolutely brilliant.”
And then the caveat. “I slightly worry about him because of the workload being put on him at the moment but that’s the only concern because he is very good and he’s going to keep getting better. He is so exciting to watch.”
This is where management becomes pivotal. Slot has already demonstrated tactical flexibility, guiding Liverpool to silverware last season. Now, with the pressure of a top four race intensifying, protecting Ekitike’s freshness could define the campaign.

The win over West Ham was a reminder of what Liverpool can be. Clinical, energetic and ruthless. If they are to climb from fifth and secure Champions League football, Ekitike will remain central to that ambition.
Credit must go to David Lynch, speaking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, for articulating what many supporters are beginning to recognise. Liverpool have found a forward who relishes responsibility. The next step is ensuring that promise translates into sustained success across the season.
For now, Liverpool look to build on 5-2 and close the gap. With Ekitike leading the line, belief is growing once more at Anfield.
