Blue Jays line up Gausman, Cease, Berrios for spring-training starts

The Toronto Blue Jays will be rolling out some veteran arms to start this week’s spring-training games.

Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, José Berríos and possibly Max Scherzer are all in line to make starts, manager John Schneider said Monday.

Gausman will start Tuesday against Team Canada’s World Baseball Classic squad, Cease will start Thursday against the Atlanta Braves and Berríos will start Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates with Eric Lauer following him in a relief role.

Scherzer, who arrived at camp Monday and threw a bullpen session, could start Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Gausman has made one start so far this spring, striking out three Miami Marlins in one inning.

Cease also had three strikeouts in his spring debut on Saturday, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing one home run against the Phillies.

Berríos has made two spring starts, including four shutout innings against the Yankees on Saturday.

Scherzer was a late arrival to camp after agreeing to a one-year, $3-million deal with incentives last week.
