Pep Guardiola hits out at scheduling for Manchester City visits to Newcastle and Real Madrid

Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola has hit out at the scheduling for their upcoming FA Cup and Champions League away matches against Newcastle and Real Madrid.

The Premier League title chasers edged past Leeds on Saturday evening thanks to a narrow 0-1 success at Elland Road, keeping pressure firmly on leaders Arsenal in the title race as January recruit Antoine Semenyo proved decisive with a goal shortly before the half-time interval.

That result ensured Manchester City remain firmly in contention domestically, but attention now turns to a demanding run of fixtures across three different competitions, both in England and on the continent.

A league meeting with Nottingham Forest is quickly followed by an FA Cup fifth round trip to Newcastle, before the squad travel to Spain for a heavyweight Champions League last-16 first leg against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu.

It is the proximity of those two away matches – on Tyneside and then in the Spanish capital – that has drawn Pep Guardiola’s frustration, particularly with the FA Cup tie scheduled for a late kick-off.

Speaking to reporters after City’s 0-1 win away at Leeds, Guardiola was quizzed on upcoming preparations for the club’s away trip in the Champions League against Real Madrid.

“It’s different arriving at 7PM or 8PM in Manchester to recover than arriving at 1AM or 2AM. It’s different,” insisted Guardiola, in reference to the FA Cup fifth round tie at St James’ Park on the preceding Saturday night, with kick-off scheduled for 8PM.

“For Newcastle it was different when they came [to the Etihad Stadium] from Qarabag in the Champions League, playing at 3PM or playing at 8PM – it’s different! So it is what it is,” he continued.

“I know all the teams in the FA Cup play at 3PM, okay we’ll play at 8PM. Fatigue, little details, make a difference, like a corner, like a free-kick, like a throw-in, details.

“We have less [time], and after that, arriving at that time, recovery, and we have to travel again [to Madrid]. So it is what it is.”

Pep Guardiola’s remarks underline the fine margins he believes can shape knockout football for Manchester City this season, and particularly at the highest European level against some of the most formidable sides in the competition.

With the Bernabéu clash looming just days after the cup encounter with Eddie Howe’s notoriously challenging outfit, recovery time, travel logistics, and preparation windows all become critical factors.

Manchester City have become accustomed to navigating congested schedules in recent seasons, but the manager’s pointed comments suggest he feels this particular sequence offers little margin for error.

Against Real Madrid – renowned serial European winners and perennial contenders for the biggest honours in the game – Pep Guardiola knows even the smallest lapse can prove decisive.

For now though, the focus remains on maintaining momentum in the Premier League with an opportunity to stay within just two points of Arsenal when both sides have played an equal amount of matches.
