The Eagles have a lot of roster spots to fill this offseason, but as the team started their draft process at the NFL Combine this week, one of the main topics of conversation with GM Howie Roseman was about A.J. Brown’s future in Philadelphia. Roseman’s answers to questions about trading the WR seemed to get more detailed as the days went on — he started the week speaking in generalities, and eventually got to how Brown fit into their offensive plans for 2026.
As he made his way through a long line of media spots, he was most forthright in an interview with CBS Sports, that the chances of him trading away Brown were not very high.
“We’re in the business of keeping great players and A.J. is a great player. A.J. is a difference making player for our team. He’s been on our team for four years. We’ve been to playoffs all four of those years, won a Super Bowl, been in two Super Bowls, he’s a captain on our team. And so, you’re not looking to get rid of players like that.
For us, the disappointment in the season was not progressing past the first round of the playoffs — we’re looking to build on that, and go forward. And so, that’s adding on.
At the same time, there’s nobody — our job as GMs, we gotta listen on anyone, and that doesn’t have anything to do with A.J. If anyone calls me and says, ‘Hey, I want to talk about a player,’ for me to say unequivocally, ‘I’m not taking your call,‘ that doesn’t make sense because I don’t know what they’re going to say on the other end.
Now, the chances that I’m doing that [trading] with a great player, they’re not very high.“
Here are some of the other things Howie has said about Brown and possibly trading away the WR this past week:
- Ahead of the combine, the GM spoke to reporters and said that you don’t often get better by subtracting your best players, but also noted that he wouldn’t be doing his job if he didn’t at least listen to any and all offers — which is the case for any player, not just Brown.
- Howie spoke to national reporters in Indianapolis and echoed the same sentiment. He again mentioned that they want to fill the Eagles roster with great players, and A.J. Brown is a great player.
- Roseman also spoke to Mike Florio and said this about Brown, “He’s a huge part of the vision Sean [Mannion] has for the offense.” It would seem like being able to work with one of the best receivers in the league was a draw for the first-time OC, and Brown should play a big role in what the team wants to do in 2026.
Overall, Howie has done his best to solidify his allegiance to Brown, while also leaving himself a little wiggle room should he receive an offer for the WR that is too good to refuse. It’s also possible that his answer on the matter evolved as he met with GMs around the league and gauged whether a big-time offer was going to land. Either way, the odds of Brown being in Philly this season are better than they were back in January.
