The Dallas Cowboys kind of caught us all by surprise about last week when they actually got ahead of things on a contract. This is definitely not the speed we are used to seeing them move at when it comes to contracts.
Running back Javonte Williams was scheduled to become a free agent in the middle of March after Dallas signed him to a modest one-year deal for a little over $3 million last offseason. Suffice it to say that Williams easily outplayed his contract and was going to get significant offers if he hit the open market. The Cowboys made noise about how they wanted him back and that they were in talks, but given their past history in this type of situation, we were well within our rights to be skeptical.
Then the Cowboys went out and struck a three-year deal worth up to $24 million with $16 million guaranteed. It’s been noted that his deal is neither the kind the Cowboys have been doing lately with running backs (re: cheap), nor is it top dollar in today’s running back market, even with how depressed that market has become in terms of value.
Obviously Brian Schottenheimer was a big driver behind this as Williams fits his and Klayton Adams’ offense perfectly.
So what is your take? We need you to give the deal a grade by voting in the poll and then hit the comments.
