Steve Sarkisian updates transfer Laurence Seymore's eligibility

As the Longhorns approach spring practice, one of the subplots is Laurence Seymore. The OL transfer from Western Kentucky is currently in a fight to be granted a waiver for the 2026 season. After using his redshirt year at Miami(FL), Seymour sat after transferring to Akron, something he wouldn't have to do today. The argument is Seymore should have that year back so he can play for the Longhorns.

Steve Sarkisian and the coaching staff are unlikely to give many assurances until they are certain, but there seems to be optimism. Inside Texas reported last week that Seymore hopes to hear from the NCAA early in March and they feel confident. Currently, it’s hard to predict what the NCAA is going to do but it seems Seymore’s could fit into a grey area of the NCAA rule.

It should be said if the NCAA doesn’t rule in Seymore’s favor, that is not the end of the process. The precedent has been set to take these matters to court and I’d expect that if the NCAA doesn’t grant Seymore’s waiver. It can’t be stressed enough how important Seymore is for Texas’ plans in 2026. He fits into the final starting spot on the OL, likely LG, and brings experience and elite pass protection. If the Texas OL is going to be a true strength of the team, Seymore likely has to be a part of it.

This process can be long and convoluted. Hopefully we hear early next week that Seymore has been granted a waiver and is clear to join the Longhorns as soon as possible. Steve Sarkisian gave us a small peek behind the curtain but the NCAA decision will come soon enough. A no from the NCAA doesn’t end the process but it sure saves Seymore some time and headache.
