Alabama football announces 2028 season opener vs. Sun Belt program

The Alabama Crimson Tide have officially announced their opening opponent for the 2028 college football season.

Per an announcement Monday, Alabama will officially open the 2028 college football at home inside Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium, doing so against the Georgia State Panthers. That game will be played Saturday, Sept. 2, in Tuscaloosa, with the start time and TV network announced at a later date.

Alabama and Georgia State have met only twice before, both of which have been Crimson Tide wins in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide won 63-7 back in 2010 during the first-ever meeting, with Alabama also winning the second in 2013, 45-3.

Georgia State is a long-time member of the Sun Belt conference, and led by head coach Dell McGee, are coming off a 2025 season that saw the Panthers finish 1-11 overall (0-8 Sun Belt). Since making the move to the FBS level prior to the 2013 season, Georgia State has recorded zero 10-win seasons, with their best campaign an 8-5 finish back in 2021.
