Tennessee QB Battle: MacIntyre vs. Brandon

Tennessee football will have its fifth different starting quarterback in five seasons after Joey Aguilar's appeal for an additional year of eligibility was denied.

Tennessee's quarterback competition is set to intensify with spring practice beginning March 16. Joey Aguilar's appeal for an extra year of eligibility was denied by Chancellor Chris Heagerty, opening the door for a battle between George MacIntyre, Faizon Brandon, and Colorado transfer Ryan Staub.

MacIntyre, a former four-star recruit, has some experience in coach Josh Heupel's system, while five-star recruit Brandon brings elite potential but needs to learn the offense. Staub has more playing experience but may have a lower ceiling. Aguilar, who led the SEC with 3,565 passing yards in 2025, will now pursue a professional career and attend the NFL scouting combine.
