Former NFL cornerback Alphonso Smith Jr., the 37th overall pick in the 2009 draft, has died by suicide at age 40 in Florida.

Smith, who played for the Broncos and Lions from 2009 to 2012, died at a Florida housing community on Wednesday, TMZ reports. He had posted a troubling message on Facebook before his passing. sweetbonan.org

The former Wake Forest standout was a consensus All-American in 2008 and was inducted into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame in 2022. He appeared in 42 regular-season games with 11 starts during his NFL career.
