CPL to houour Sir Garfield Sobers with minute’s applause across tournament

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will honour West Indies great Sir Garfield Sobers with a minute’s applause before the first match at every tournament venue during the 2026 season.

The tribute will be held once in each host country as the CPL travels across the Caribbean. It will give fans across the region a chance to come together and remember one of the greatest cricketers the game has ever seen.

Sir Garfield Sobers passed away on July 17, 2026, at the age of 89. During his 20-year international career, he played 93 Tests, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78, including 26 centuries. He also picked up 235 wickets. His unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958 was the highest individual Test score for 36 years, while his famous six sixes in one over for Nottinghamshire in 1968 remains one of cricket’s most memorable achievements.

“Sir Garfield Sobers did not just play cricket, he defined what was possible in the sport. He gave West Indies cricket its identity on the world stage and inspired generations of players across the region to believe in their own greatness. It is only fitting that every ground we play on this season pauses to honour him,” said CPL CEO Pete Russell via a press release.

The CPL has also said it will continue to celebrate Sir Garfield’s contribution to cricket during the season, with more tributes planned, including at the tournament final at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
