Despite scoring 732 runs in IPL 2026, Shubman Gill has once again been left out of India’s T20I plans. The selectors have reportedly asked the India captain to focus on the bigger picture: the World Test Championship and the 2027 ODI World Cup. With nine Tests and around 35 ODIs scheduled before the World Cup, the BCCI is keen to avoid burnout and ensure Gill remains fit for the two major ICC events. While his T20I future remains open ahead of the 2028 World Cup, it isn’t an immediate priority since we already have Abhishek, Samson and Sooryavanshi. Read more here.

Shreyas Iyer’s message as India captain

Shreyas Iyer has made it clear that becoming India’s new T20I captain will not change who he is. Speaking after his appointment as skipper for the Ireland and England tours and the Asian Games, Iyer said he has no intention of copying anyone or leading under someone else’s influence. Instead, he wants to remain authentic and trust the approach that has brought him this far. The appointment caps off a remarkable comeback for Iyer, who had been out of India’s T20I setup since 2023. Why no Jasprit Bumrah?

Sanjay Manjrekar has questioned Jasprit Bumrah’s limited availability in T20I cricket, suggesting the star pacer could have been India’s captain had he committed to playing more regularly. With Suryakumar Yadav removed as skipper, Manjrekar felt Bumrah was a natural candidate given his leadership qualities and stature within the team. However, the BCCI has chosen to rest Bumrah from the Ireland and England T20I tours as part of a workload-management plan focused on the 2027 ODI World Cup and the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. After a batting-friendly opening day, the Mullanpur pitch offered far more assistance to bowlers on Day 2 as 10 wickets fell for 310 runs. India added 196 runs to their overnight score before declaring at 564/8, with Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill and Washington Sundar making contributions. Afghanistan pacer Mohammad Saleem Safi starred with a six-wicket haul, using reverse swing effectively. In reply, India’s bowlers took control. Debutant Manav Suthar impressed immediately, claiming three wickets with sharp turn, while Prasidh Krishna chipped in with two. Afghanistan struggled against the spin and pace combination, ending the day deep in trouble and still trailing India by 451 runs.

New BCB President

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has officially been elected as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), taking charge for a four-year term after previously leading an interim committee. Tamim had been tasked with investigating allegations of political favouritism, malpractice and abuse of power that led to the dissolution of the previous board. Following his unanimous election, Tamim has promised transparency and accountability within the BCB while acknowledging that reforms would require support from the board’s wider membership. England’s opening Test win over New Zealand has reignited the debate around “Bazball”, but this time there are signs the team is finally showing greater maturity. After criticism for their reckless batting against India and Australia over the last year, England appeared far more adaptable at Lord’s. Batters were willing to leave deliveries, tighten their defence and respect difficult conditions instead of attacking every ball. Head coach Brendon McCullum praised the team’s ability to adjust to a bowler-friendly pitch, where England’s scores of 140 and 226 proved enough for a 115-run win. The performance suggested England are moving away from blind aggression and embracing a more balanced approach, something Michael Vaughan had previously described as “Bazball with brains.”

Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Chandrakant Pandit, who has worked closely with Shreyas Iyer when he led the franchise to the IPL title in 2024, has hailed the Ajit Agarkar-led national selection committee’s decision to make him the captain of the India T20 team.

“I am very happy to see that another Mumbai cricketer will be leading the Indian team. Shreyas has done well while leading Punjab Kings in the last two years and his form has improved in recent seasons. Shreyas firstly deserved a return to the Indian team, and of course the captaincy. I’m sure Shreyas will make this opportunity count as he has the strength and ability to shoulder the responsibility of being a good skipper,” Pandit told mid-day on Saturday.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Pandit went on to explain Iyer’s leadership traits which he experienced during their KKR stint together.

“He was a good listener. I have never seen him excited or confused on the field. In my philosophy, the captain wins 50 per cent of the match through his field placements and bowling changes. Shreyas showed that when he was KKR captain. We, the KKR support staff, never felt the need to guide him on the ground because he is so mature. He has a lot of experience in T20 cricket. I would like to praise the selection committee for showing trust in him,” said Pandit, adding that “no one can question Shreyas’s appointment as India captain. If you look at his record, he deserved it.”

Iyer, 31, who has scored 1104 runs in 51 T20Is, last played a T20I for India in December 2023.

Pandit also revealed that Iyer was confident of making a comeback to the Indian team.

“I remember speaking to Shreyas once and he was very positive and confident. He told me, ‘Sir, I will come back to the Indian team.’ Some players change and go into a different zone after getting such an opportunity, but Shreyas is a cool and calm player. He knows what to do on the ground and how to implement decisions on the field. He never hesitates to take spontaneous decisions,” Pandit signed off.

I stayed up for all four hours. Not because I am a particular Alexander Zverev fan. But because as a tennis lover, you know that sometimes sport presents a moment where a burden is lifted. And that is exactly what unfolded on the red clay of Roland Garros on Sunday night. For nearly a decade, Alexander Zverev has been one of the most fascinating contradictions in world sport. Here was a player who had won Olympic gold, ATP Finals titles and Masters 1000 events. He had beaten the very best on the biggest stages. Yet every Grand Slam seemed to end with the same question hanging over him: Can he actually win one?

Against Flavio Cobolli, the scoreline read 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1. But anyone who watched knows that the numbers tell only half the story. Cobolli represented the fearless future. The Italian played with the abandon of a man who had little to lose and everything to gain. There were moments when his forehand crackled through the Paris night and you wondered whether youth was about to write its own fairy tale. If I heard right, a commentator actually compared it to Bollywood style fireworks.

But the deeper story was always Zverev’s. As the fourth set slipped away and Cobolli forced a decider, you could almost hear the ghosts arriving – the loss at the US Open final, French Open final and the disappointment at the The Australian Open. The horrific ankle injury suffered on this very court four years ago. Tennis fans carry memories, and Zverev has had more than his share of painful ones and he did refer to it during the victory speech.

The fifth set felt less like a tennis set and more like an emotional release. Every hold of the serve seemed to loosen another knot. Every winner felt like a rejection of a narrative that had followed him for years. By the end, Cobolli’s resistance had broken paving the way for the new champion. What struck me most was not the celebration. It was the relief!

Zverev’s reaction was more human and which is why the victory resonated so much. Shortly after the match, Sachin Tendulkar captured the sentiment perfectly when he congratulated Zverev and said he had “always felt he was a special player.” It was a simple observation, but an important one. Talent was never the question. The question was whether perseverance would eventually be rewarded.

Years from now, when people look at Alexander Zverev’s résumé, they will see “French Open Champion 2026.” They will not see the doubts, the injuries, the near misses or the sleepless nights that came before it. We will remember watching a man stop fighting his past and finally embrace his future. It was a lesson in persistence and a reminder that sometimes the most satisfying victories are not won by the prodigy who arrives early, but by the traveller who simply refuses to stop walking. I cannot but end with that quote at the Roland Garros “Victory belongs to the most tenacious”; indeed it did on Sunday night!
