Fifa : Gianni Infantino peut-il compter sur le soutien de l’Afrique?

Fragilisé par le tollé suscité par son projet avorté d’ouverture de la Fifa aux investisseurs privés, Gianni Infantino a réuni mercredi plusieurs hauts responsables de l’instance au siège africain de la Fifa, au complexe Mohammed VI de Salé, près de Rabat. La réunion, tenue à huis clos et qui a duré une bonne partie de la journée, n’a débouché sur aucune communication officielle : aucun détail n’a filtré sur le contenu des échanges ni sur d’éventuelles décisions. Mais selon le journal britannique « The Times », le patron de la Fifa aurait promis la finale du Mondial 2030 au Maroc en échange de son soutien alors que pays doit co-organiser la prochaine compétition avec l'Espagne et le Portugal. Pourquoi Gianna Infantino a-t-il choisi le siège africain de la Fifa au Maroc pour cette réunion de crise ? Une partie de l’Europe, notamment l’UEFA, conteste fortement sa gestion de la Fifa. LONDON, England, August 7, 2026 – Norway have called on Fifa president Gianni Infantino to resign following his aborted attempt to sell off stakes in the World Cup to private investors, but Mexico and Argentina have voiced their support for the 56-year-old.

Norway have gone a step further than the football associations of England, Wales, Croatia and Albania, all of whom have withdrawn support for Infantino without explicitly calling for him to resign. wlop.pl

“He [Infantino] does not have the institutional trust required to govern Fifa stably in the times we are in,” Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) president Lise Klaveness said on Friday.

“There is no going back for Gianni Infantino. The international football cooperation is very much in trouble, and we must have a reason to get together now, and we want to ask the Fifa president to resign now.

“We will see which other countries eventually join in, if that becomes the strategy from the Uefa board. We are not going to ask for an extraordinary [Uefa board] meeting, we will ask him to resign in our dialogue with Fifa.”

Klaveness, who is a qualified lawyer, went through a list of concerns that the Norwegian FA has expressed to Fifa during her four-year tenure.

Among them were questions around the awarding of tournaments, the inaugural Fifa peace prize that was awarded to US President Donald Trump in December, and the overturning of a ban for American forward Folarin Balogun during the recent World Cup following a phone call from Trump.

Meanwhile, earlier on Friday the Mexican Football Federation broke ranks with its regional governing body Concacaf to come out in support of Infantino.

Concacaf, which runs football in North and Central America and the Caribbean, called for a “comprehensive reckoning” of Infantino’s presidency after he aborted plans to sell off stakes in the World Cup to private investors.

However, 2026 World Cup co-hosts Mexico have backed Infantino’s leadership amid widespread calls for him to resign.

“The FMF [Mexican FA] supports president Infantino’s leadership in continuing to promote the development of football through institutional strengthening,” a statement read.

It echoed a statement from Conmebol – South America’s governing body – in saying it would reject any attempt to remove Infantino without a vote involving all 211 Fifa members.

“The FMF will neither recognise nor approve any process convened outside of that institutional framework, and it joins the call made by president Infantino to collectively continue developing football for the benefit of the 211 member associations,” it added.

However, Conmebol did “express its concern about the repeated unilateral actions taken without resorting to dialogue or the institutional mechanisms provided for dealing with this type of situation”.

Meanwhile, the football association of 2026 World Cup runners-up Argentina praised Infantino for recognising and apologising for his “errors”.

It described his decade-long tenure as Fifa president as “centred on the development of soccer worldwide and institutional strength based on a clear, stable, and transparent governance model”.

Infantino is unanimously backed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), but faces opposition from European football’s governing Uefa and Concacaf.

European teams could still boycott the World Cup as Uefa said its conditions had not been met, despite Infantino’s plan being aborted.

“Assurances have to be made that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again,” a Uefa statement read.

“These conditions have not been met.”

Uefa has already said it has lost confidence in Infantino, calling the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal a “shabby, back room, opaque deal”.

The English FA has sent a letter withdrawing its support for Infantino, while Wales, Albania and Croatia are among other individual associations to have turned their back on the 56-year-old.

Concacaf described Infantino’s proposal as “a symptom of leadership that has stopped putting football first”, and that “this recent unilateral and egregious act of poor governance and leadership follows a pattern of missteps and similar behaviour”.

However, unlike Uefa, it did not go as far as to say it had lost confidence in the Fifa president.

Before Infantino withdrew his proposal, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said it stood “in solidarity” with Uefa and Concacaf in opposition to the plans.

Infantino had offered all associations $40m (£30m) if they backed a proposal for private investment in its tournaments, including the men’s and women’s World Cups, through the FFE subsidiary.

During a meeting of Fifa executives in Morocco on Wednesday, the world governing body said “mistakes” regarding FFE were “acknowledged”, saying it was “not the intention” for the Fifa Council and members association to “feel excluded from the process and that the process should have been handled differently”.

Uefa’s statement in response added: “Uefa made it abundantly clear in its statement on Saturday that it has lost confidence in Gianni Infantino’s presidency. That position holds.

“Yesterday’s announcement that some people employed by the Fifa president (and whose careers depend on his favour) agree with him changes nothing.”

Fifa has been approached for comment.

Officiellement présenté ce jeudi au siège de la Fédération Ivoirienne de Football (FIF), Hervé Renard effectue son grand retour à la tête des Éléphants, onze ans après le titre continental remporté en 2015. Aux côtés du président Yacine Idriss Diallo, le technicien français a expliqué les raisons de son retour, ses priorités et ses ambitions pour une sélection ivoirienne appelée à ouvrir un nouveau cycle.

Idriss Diallo : « Poursuivre le travail et l’améliorer »

Avant d’officialiser le retour du technicien français, le président de la FIF a tenu à remercier Emerse Faé et son staff, dont le contrat est arrivé à son terme.

« Je voudrais remercier Emerse Faé, son staff et tous les joueurs qui ont participé à ces deux années d’aventure. Les résultats obtenus ont permis au football ivoirien de retrouver toute sa place sur la scène internationale. »

Pour le patron de la Maison de verre de Treichville, le choix d’Hervé Renard s’inscrit dans une logique de continuité.

« Notre responsabilité est de construire, de consolider et de faire évoluer notre projet. Nous avons décidé de poursuivre le travail entamé et de l’améliorer avec Hervé Renard. »

Yacine Idriss Diallo estime que l’expérience du Français constitue un atout majeur à l’approche d’un calendrier particulièrement exigeant.

« Nous entrons dans un cycle de deux Coupes d’Afrique des Nations en deux ans. Cela demande de l’agilité, de l’efficacité, une grande capacité d’adaptation et une parfaite connaissance du football africain. Hervé réunit toutes ces qualités. »

Le président de la FIF a également assuré que toutes les conditions seraient réunies pour permettre au nouveau sélectionneur de réussir sa mission.

« La Fédération mettra tout en œuvre pour qu’il travaille dans les meilleures conditions. L’équipe nationale fait la fierté des Ivoiriens et nous avons le devoir de répondre à leurs attentes. »

Hervé Renard : « C’est un grand honneur de revenir »

Dès sa prise de parole, Hervé Renard n’a pas caché son émotion de retrouver une sélection avec laquelle il avait écrit l’une des plus belles pages du football ivoirien.

« C’est un grand honneur pour moi de revenir à la tête de cette sélection. J’avais décidé depuis quelques mois de revenir sur le continent africain. Revenir avec une équipe de cette qualité est une immense fierté. »

Conscient des attentes qui entourent son retour, le technicien de 57 ans a fixé le cap.

« Cette équipe est faite pour gagner des trophées. Les attentes du peuple ivoirien sont immenses et l’exigence devra être maximale pour obtenir les meilleurs résultats possibles. »

« Je n’ai pas beaucoup réfléchi »

Interrogé sur les discussions avec la FIF, Hervé Renard a reconnu que son choix s’était imposé naturellement. Il a confié ne pas avoir beaucoup hésité lorsque la proposition lui a été soumise, mettant en avant la qualité de l’effectif ivoirien ainsi que l’implication de la Fédération et de l’État ivoirien.

Pour lui, l’objectif est désormais clair : poursuivre la progression de la sélection et atteindre les ambitions fixées.

« Il faut aller chercher ces petits détails qui permettent de continuer à gagner. J’espère avoir un jour la chance de disputer une Coupe du monde avec les Éléphants. »

La forme avant le statut

Sur la sélection des joueurs, Hervé Renard a affiché une philosophie sans ambiguïté.

« Un sélectionneur doit choisir les joueurs les plus performants du moment. On peut avoir une immense carrière, mais si l’on ne joue pas régulièrement, il devient difficile d’être performant au niveau international. L’intérêt collectif doit toujours primer. »

Le technicien français a également laissé la porte ouverte aux joueurs évoluant dans le championnat local.

« Peu importe le championnat dans lequel évolue un joueur. Ce qui compte, c’est sa capacité à apporter quelque chose à la sélection. Si un joueur de Ligue 1 ivoirienne mérite sa place, il sera appelé. »

Malgré les bonnes performances récentes de la sélection, Hervé Renard estime que plusieurs aspects peuvent encore être améliorés.

« Cette équipe possède énormément de qualités. Elle a rivalisé avec de grandes nations lors de la Coupe du monde, mais elle a parfois manqué de maîtrise dans les fins de rencontre. Nous devons être plus disciplinés collectivement. Le collectif fera toujours la différence. »

Un staff expérimenté

Le nouveau sélectionneur a également dévoilé les premiers noms de son encadrement technique. Son adjoint principal sera un technicien ivoirien ayant travaillé aux côtés de Sergio Conceição au FC Porto, à l’AC Milan, au FC Nantes et à Al-Ittihad.

David Barriac sera chargé de la préparation physique, Alexandre Ferreira occupera le poste d’analyste vidéo, tandis qu’Arouna Dindane conservera son rôle de team manager.

Enfin, Hervé Renard a adressé un message d’unité aux supporters ivoiriens.

« Les grandes victoires se construisent tous ensemble : avec une grande fédération, des dirigeants, un staff compétent, des joueurs totalement investis et un peuple derrière son équipe. Essayons ensemble d’écrire de nouvelles pages de l’histoire du football ivoirien. Nous avons rendez-vous dès le mois de septembre. »
