Former Yankees outfielder signs with White Sox immediately after being release

Just three days after being designated for assignment by the New York Yankees, Randal Grichuk has agreed to an MLB deal with the Chicago White Sox, according to reports. Chicago will need to make corresponding moves to clear space on both the active roster and 40-man roster. Adding the veteran makes sense for the White Sox, considering they have been playing competitive baseball this season.

A Short Stint in New York

Grichuk’s time in the Bronx was brief. The 34-year-old made the team out of camp on a minor league deal and served primarily in a platoon role off the bench, seeing most of his opportunities against left-handed pitching. However, the production never followed.

In limited action, he hit:

  • .194 batting average
  • .212 on-base percentage
  • 0 home runs
  • 10 strikeouts in 33 plate appearances

That lack of impact ultimately led to his DFA.

A Specialist Looking to Rebound

While his recent numbers are underwhelming, Grichuk’s track record suggests there’s still value—especially in a matchup-specific role. From 2022–2024, he was one of the most productive hitters in baseball against left-handed pitching, posting:

  • .317 average
  • .367 OBP
  • .573 slugging percentage

He also racked up:

  • 25 home runs
  • 34 doubles
  • 4 triples

That’s the version of Grichuk the White Sox are betting on.

A Low-Risk Move for Chicago

For the White Sox, this is a classic low-risk, potential-reward signing. Grichuk brings veteran experience, power potential, and a clear role against left-handed pitching. If he regains his previous form, he could quickly become a valuable piece in the lineup.

If not, the commitment is minimal. Randal Grichuk didn’t find his footing in New York. But in Chicago, he gets another shot. And for a player with a proven ability to mash left-handed pitching, it might not take much for this move to pay off.

Man City snub Man Utd FA Youth Cup final venue offer

Manchester City will host their FA Youth Cup final against Manchester United at their smaller Joie Stadium after turning down an offer to switch it to Old Trafford.

City were drawn at home for the game but are unable to use the main pitch, with Pep Guardiola's first team still having three home Premier League games to play.

United, who last won the trophy in 2022 - when more than 60,000 were at Old Trafford to watch a team including Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho beat Nottingham Forest - told City they were prepared to host the game.

City said no, so the game will be played at the 7,000-capacity ground, which is used by the club's Premier League 2 and women's teams.

The club have used the stadium to host Youth Cup finals previously but since 2000, every other host club has played the game at their main stadium.

Two years ago a crowd of 20,000 watched City beat Leeds United in the final at Etihad Stadium.

It is a repeat of the 1986 final, hosted over two legs at Old Trafford and Maine Road and won by City.

United sources feel it is a mistake and will cost the majority of the players involved an experience in what could turn out to be the biggest game of their lives.

City are yet to confirm a date for the game but it is likely to take place on Thursday, 14 May. The club have been asked for a response.

Man United star Benjamin Sesko tops unique stat unmatched by any player

Man United star Benjamin Sesko tops unique stat unmatched by any player

Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko stands alone as he dominates a brilliant statistic that no other player can match at the moment.

Terrific form

Although Sesko endured a somewhat slow start to life following his move from RB Leipzig last summer, he has truly grown into his role over the past few months.

He had found the back of the net just twice in 15 appearances before the turn of the year.

Michael Carrick’s arrival as Ruben Amorim’s temporary replacement coincided with a significant uptick in form for the Slovenian. He has scored seven times under Carrick, with some of his goals proving very crucial for United.

Sesko bagged his 11th Premier League goal of the campaign on Sunday to help United to a 3-2 victory over bitter rivals Liverpool. It was a real striker’s goal as well. Freddie Woodman parried a Bruno Fernandes header into his thigh and Sesko was all too happy to bundle it home from close range.

The 22-year-old is quieting his doubters, and considering how young he is, there are still several levels he can climb.

Statman Dave has unearthed a staggering Sesko stat, demonstrating just how clinical the forward has been in front of goal.

Super Sesko

According to Statman Dave, Sesko has scored a Premier League goal every 86 minutes since the new year.

This represents the best return rate of any player who has found the back of the net at least five times.

Sesko and his teammates return to action on Saturday when they go away to Sunderland. With Champions League football already secured, United’s attention is now set to start shifting towards the summer transfer window.

As uncertainty continues to engulf the future of Joshua Zirkzee, United may need to dip into the market for another striker to ensure Sesko is not solely burdened with the task of leading the line next term.

Zirkzee continues to be strongly linked with a return to Serie A amidst his struggle for playing time.
