Wentz has carved out a lengthy career in the NFL as both a starter and veteran bridge quarterback. While his early-career peak showcased Pro Bowl-level play, recent seasons have seen him transition into more of a backup and spot-start role. Even so, his arm strength, experience in multiple offensive systems, and ability to step in if needed still make him a viable depth option. Wentz started in 5 games in 2025 - ending with a 2-3 record, 1,216 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions after Patrick Mahomes missed time with injury and at the end of out-of-reach games.
For Tampa Bay, the appeal would be stability. Veteran backup quarterbacks often serve as an extension of the offensive staff, helping with film preparation and providing insurance in case of injuries. Wentz has started games for multiple franchises and understands how to prepare as both a starter and reserve. At this stage of his career, Wentz is unlikely to command a large contract. A realistic projection would be a one-year deal in the range of $3–6 million, similar to other veteran backup quarterback contracts across the league.
That price point would allow Tampa Bay to add experience without limiting flexibility for other roster needs, which could be plenty if the team loses Lavonte David, Jamel Dean, and Mike Evans in the same offseason.
