As key dates approach in the NFL offseason, one clear goal for the Pittsburgh Steelers is to acquire several wide receivers. NFL free agency opens March 11th, with the 2026 NFL Draft shortly following in Pittsburgh on April 23rd.
In 2025, the black and gold struggled mightily in the pass-catching department, as just one wideout (DK Metcalf) eclipsed 400 yards. While there’s heavy speculation that the Steelers will select a receiver or two in the upcoming draft, they shouldn’t ignore the free agent market as a way to bolster the squad even more.
Current Minnesota Vikings WR3 Jalen Nailor appears to be a player who could provide precisely what Pittsburgh needs.
Steelers writer views Pittsburgh as strong suitor for Vikings wideout
It was a difficult season for the reigning NFC North runner-ups in 2025-26 as quarterback inconsistency halted any potential progress. The club ended the season respectably at 9-8; however, virtually none of the team’s receivers could consistently perform.
This includes the four-year pro Nailor, who, amid the QB struggles, put up his best NFL season yet. Accepting a larger role in the offense, the Michigan State product saw 53 targets for 29 catches, 444 yards, and four touchdowns. With a small yet promising sample size, Sports Illustrated’s Jacob Punturi feels the 26-year-old is the perfect depth fit for Pittsburgh.
When discussing the 2026 free agent class, specifically at receiver, Punturi sees it as very lackluster in terms of superior talent.
“The top of the class is unimpressive, but there are plenty of depth options,” said Punturi. “One that stands out as the perfect addition is Minnesota Vikings receiver Jalen Nailor.”
Punturi goes on to describe two key aspects that make Nailor the perfect fit in Pittsburgh: ties to offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio and an ideal role player as a WR3.
Angelichio served as Minnesota’s tight ends coach/passing game coordinator for the previous four seasons, forcing him and Nailor to work closely every week. Despite his limited statistical output, the 5-foot-11 wideout has taken advantage of his opportunities, proving to be a reliable deep-ball and splash-play threat.
Adding another splash-play threat could force opponents to respect more than just Metcalf and Calvin Austin III, opening more opportunities for all.
In terms of filling the WR3 role, Pittsburgh brass would ideally add a WR2-capable pick via the draft who would play behind Metcalf. This hypothetical arsenal of receivers could give all field positions a better chance to succeed.
